Original Mac GUI Artist Susan Kare on iOS 7

Quoted in the Ars Technica article:

Generally a good direction—am a fan of simple, meaningful symbols that fill a space, such as Music and Weather. It's better—more iconic, less illustrative.

I generally agree with the idea that icons should be……well, iconic, not illustrations. So, the trend is good, but the current iteration is obviously pretty rough. I expect they will be refined significantly before iOS 7's official release.

I don't delve into this stuff as deeply as other design-minded people, but I'm kind of surprised that I hadn't heard of Kare until now. Her work is unquestionably a huge part of the design language of Macs up to the end of the System 9 era, and much of modern OS X iconography is obviously derived from her work. It's amazing how many of those icons lasted virtually unchanged for decades in various Mac OS iterations.
